You Are Allowed to Have a Good Day
Enjoying a moment of peace does not mean you have forgotten your grief or stopped caring about what is still difficult.

Sometimes, when you’ve been through enough hard things, a good day can almost feel uncomfortable.
You wake up and realize you’re not thinking about the thing that’s been weighing on you. You laugh at something. You enjoy your coffee. You spend time with someone you love and, for a little while, life feels almost normal again. Then that little voice in the back of your mind reminds you of everything that’s still wrong.
The person you’re missing is still gone. The diagnosis hasn’t changed. The bills are still there. The situation you’re dealing with didn’t magically disappear overnight. So sometimes we feel like we’re not supposed to enjoy the good moments too much, as though feeling happy somehow means we’re ignoring everything we’re still carrying.
But you are allowed to have a good day.
You don’t have to feel guilty because you smiled. You don’t have to apologize because you laughed. You don’t have to believe that enjoying today somehow means you don’t care about yesterday. Pain and joy can exist in the same life, and one doesn’t have to cancel out the other.
You can still miss someone and have a beautiful afternoon with the people who are here. You can still be dealing with something difficult and have something you’re genuinely excited about. You can still carry scars from what you’ve been through and experience moments that feel peaceful. Those things can all be true at the same time.
I’ve had seasons where it felt like I needed to stay focused on everything that had gone wrong. Almost like letting myself enjoy something meant I wasn’t taking the harder parts of life seriously enough. But I’ve come to believe that the good moments aren’t distractions from the journey. They’re part of the journey too.
A good day doesn’t mean your problems are solved. It doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten where you’ve been. It doesn’t mean you’re suddenly healed from everything that hurt you. It simply means that, for whatever reason, something good found its way into today.
Let it.
If you get a day where you laugh until your stomach hurts, enjoy it. If you get an evening where your mind finally gets quiet, enjoy that too. If your family makes you smile, don’t immediately move on to the next thing. If you wake up feeling hopeful for the first time in a long time, don’t talk yourself out of it because you’re afraid something will come along and take it away.
You don’t have to earn happiness by suffering long enough. You don’t have to stay miserable to prove that what happened to you mattered. And you don’t have to keep looking backward when life gives you a reason to look forward.
Sometimes grace looks like getting another chance. Sometimes it looks like healing. And sometimes, I think, it simply looks like being given an ordinary day that doesn’t hurt quite as much.
When that day comes, receive it.
Take the walk. Drink the coffee. Call the person you love. Sit outside for a while. Laugh when something is funny. Let yourself breathe. Whatever good is in front of you today, don’t be so busy waiting for the next hard thing that you miss it.
You are allowed to have a good day.
And if tomorrow gets hard again, you’ll deal with tomorrow when it comes. You don’t have to borrow tomorrow’s pain today.
For today, if there’s something good in front of you, let yourself enjoy it. You deserve to experience the good moments too.
