Preparing RSO for Balm and Salve Bases

Last Updated: October 2026 · Mercy Leaf

Preparing RSO in a balm base

  1. Gently melt the measured oil and beeswax using a warm-water bath.
  2. Warm the sealed RSO syringe in a waterproof bag in warm water and measure the intended amount.
  3. Thoroughly blend the RSO into a small portion of warmed oil and then into the full liquid oil-and-wax mixture.
  4. Pour into a clean, dry container, cool completely and label for external use only.

Use only on intact skin. Source THC concentration does not establish skin absorption or medical benefit.

Emulsification & Mixing

An oil-and-wax balm with no added water is an anhydrous system; an oil/water emulsifier is not automatically needed. Thoroughly incorporate the extract while the base is fluid and follow the recipe’s cooling directions. Adding water changes the formulation and creates preservation needs; lecithin is not a preservative. It does not establish skin penetration, transdermal delivery or medical benefit. Keep containers dry, use only on intact skin and label for external use only.

Sunflower lecithin and cannabis edibles: what it does and when you need it.

Only apply to intact skin. Source THC strength does not establish skin absorption or therapeutic benefit. See the balm recipe.
